Description
A DUTCH MARQUETRY LONG-CASE CLOCK (Dutch, mid-18th century) by Jan Hermelink (Dutch). The clock has a musical movement that plays six airs. The arched dial is painted with an automated scene of mythological figures in a woodland glade playing pan pipes and other instruments. A sliver chapter ring is marked with the minutes in increments of five and roman numerals for the hours. This frames a gilded matte center painted with a phases-of-the-moon indicator and two segmental apertures to indicate the month and day. The clock works are encased by a shaped hood topped by three gilt-wood figures of musicians, a carved gilt-wood crest shaped like an urn surrounded by scrolling foliage, and is carved with foliate designs. The corners of the hood are framed by two gilt columns entwined with black-painted foliage and ormolu Corinthian capitals. The trunk is enclosed by a shaped door inlaid with flowering foliage surrounded by a molded and carved border. A pendulum aperture overlaid with ormolu depicts the classical figure of Time. The bombe base is inlaid with flowering foliages and stands on bold claw feet. Printed along the bottom of the clock face is "Jan Hermelink Amserdam."
