Description
A nine-piece suite of chairs (French, late 19th century) from the workshop of Jules Allard and Sons. The set is comprised of three gilt-wood armchairs (.1-.3), four gilt-wood side chairs (.4-.7), and two gilt-wood stools (.8-.9). All are upholstered in rose pink floral damask, with edges bordered with braid, and finished in old gold and silver.
.1-.3 – The armchairs have square upholstered backs which are surmounted with shaped, carved gilt-wood cresting depicting mantled cabochons flanked by scrolling foliage and grotesque masks. Padded armrests sit on square supports carved with pendant foliage. The square front legs end in molded dolphin heads, the four legs are connected by a molded h-stretcher. Pink tassel fringe descends from the back rail, armrests, and seat rail.
.4-.7 – The matching side chairs have a square back and stuff-over seats, the back rail and seat rail have a pink tasseled fringe. The front square legs terminate in molded dolphin heads, and the legs are connected by an h-stretcher
.8-.9 – The pair of carved gilt-wood stools has a pink tassel fringe descending from the seat rail, all four block legs are carved with pendant foliage and end in molded dolphin heads. The legs are connected by a molded stretcher with a carved foliate block at center.
