Description
A "CHINESE GATE" OR "MOON GATE" (American, 1862) erected in 1862 by William Shepard Wetmore to mark the southern perspective of his then ocean facing acreage, forming a boundary between the park or lawn area of the estate and the pasture. A rough hewn granite block and granite capped wall frames a circular opening with a wrought iron pedestrian gate. The crest of the circle is crowned with a "monkey" seat with seven graduated steps on each side descending to a short landing, set within the wall on the side facing the house are five steps leading to the ground. The crest of the gate is set with a black painted wrought iron handrail.
