Two Pairs of Stained Glass Sash Windows

TWO PAIRS OF STAINED GLASS SASH WINDOWS (American, 1872-1873) attributed to Donald MacDonald (Scottish, 1841-1916) of W. J. McPherson & Co., Boston, MA. The windows are done in a geometric English Aesthetic Movement style with a design vocabulary largely drawn from Owen Jones's "Grammar of Ornament." Done in multi-color arrangements, the windows are sectioned into bands of white quarries painted with floral and foliate motifs and broad bands of stylized plant motifs. These include spun roundels, or bulls-eye glass, used to represent stylized blossoms. These are doubled on top of a thin sheet of white glass painted with a sunburst motif, as a result of this plating, the designer avoided the difficulties of painting directly on the surface of the bulls-eye and marring its brilliance by re-firing. It is signed in enamel paint on the lower right corner "W. J. McPherson & Co., Boston."
