Description
A PAIR OF REPRODUCTION RELIEF DEMI SCULPTURES OF APOLLO AND APHRODITE (French, 2000) cast from originals (PSNC.1863.1-.2) by Guillaume Coustou the Younger (French, 1716-1777). The sculptures in demi-relief are installed on the rear façade of The Elms. Each is set on a Rococo-style base. The figure of Apollo (.1) is seated on a rocky outcropping with his lyre placed behind his right foot, a cherub offers him a laurel branch. The figure of Aphrodite (.2) is seated on cloud forms with her right arm outstretched to her side, a cherub reaches across her lap and offers her an arrow. The originals (PSNC.1863.1-.2) now reside in the conservatory of The Elms.
