A Pair Parcel Gilt of Louis XVI Style Painted Bergeres

A PAIR OF PARCEL GILT LOUIS XVI STYLE PAINTED BERGÈRES (French, 19th century) with elongated oval backs and concave frames. The wooden chair frames are carved with delicate foliate patterns and have a raised ribbon design on the top of the crest rail. They stand on four tapered and fluted cylindrical legs. The seat, back, and side panels are upholstered in a modern blue stripped silk lampas fabric with tendrils of pink floral bouquets by Scalamandré, pattern #20152. While these are 19th century examples, the bergère style chair was first introduced during the reign of Louis XV (1715-1774). Identifiable by their closed armrests, loose cushion, and upholstered back and arms, bergères were meant for lounging in comfort and better accommodated the voluminous women’s fashions of the 18th century.
