Description
ASTRONOMICAL TABLE CLOCK (German, reproduction after a 16th c. design) with a rectangular case surmounted by an intricate pierced gilt metal top with winged horses at the corners, raised figures of women decorate the front and back, it is flanked by gilt-metal pilasters on the sides, and sits on a flared gilt-metal base with battle scenes in relief. There are multiple dials on the clock, including a zodiac calendar, day and night hours, and what appears to be an astrolabe. Meant to serve more as an art piece than a functional household clock, detailed pieces such as this were purchased to show off craftsmanship and reflect the worldliness of their owners. Similar in design to clocks by the famous clockmaker Jeremais Metzger (German, born 1527, active 1564-1589), whose pieces were sought after by an aristocratic clientele.
