Description
A CHINESE EXPORT GAMING BOX (Chinese, 19th century), composed of black lacquerware, the board opens to have a chess/checker board on the top and a backgammon board on the interior. The exterior border decorations are done in black and gold. The border along the chess board depicts foliage, insects, and birds, the edge is further decorated with a Greek key design. The exterior side edge of the board is decorated with floral motifs and small scenes depicting people and buildings. There are 16 red wooden gaming pieces, 16 black wooden gaming pieces, and 2 black and gold lacquer cylinder game pieces associated with this gaming box.
