Description
AN OAK TALL CASE CLOCK (Dutch, c. 1654-1720) by Steven Huygens (Dutch, c. 1654-1720). The movement follows Dutch petite sonnerie striking, the brass dial is surmounted by a phases of the moon lunar calendar, the face has a silvered chapter ring with roman numerals denoting the hours, gilt-metal figural spandrels representing the four season decorate the corners. The bottom of the clock face is signed "Huygens Amsterdam." The case has a shaped hood surmounted by a gilt-wood figure of Atlas holding the earth, and gilt foliate finials on either side below. The trunk has a shaped door centered by a pendulum aperture framed in ormolu showing a figure on a bull, possibly Zeus and Europa. The plinth has inverted corbels and is raised on heavy ball and claw feet.
