Description
A majolica jardinière (English, 1880) manufactured by Minton, Stoke-on-Trent, England. The planter has a flat rim, short neck, and two loop handles on opposite sides of the shoulder with incised decoration above a bulbous body. The Chinese style body is decorated in relief with flowers and ferns in a blue glaze on a yellow ground. The whole is raised on four blue claw feet that are topped with the grotesque mask of a mythical beast. The underside of the planter is impressed “MINTONS” along with the symbol of a triangle with a line down the center, indicating an 1880 production date, as well as several other unintelligible marks.
