Two Large Tiffany Glass Brick Window Panels
Date
1881
Description
TWO LARGE GLASS BRICK WINDOW PANELS (American, 1881) composed of opalescent glass bricks produced by Louis Heidt (American, 1835-1901) for Louis C. Tiffany & Co., New York. The window panels are composed of 387 individual opalescent glass bricks stamped with varied floral designs and colored in varied shades of blue, that have been set into a copper lattice frame coved with narrow strips of oak in imitation of a Japanese Shoji screen. Each glass brick is approx. 2" sq. of translucent and opalescent glass, heavily marbleized and stamped with a stylized floral form. Installed in 1881 as part of the McKim, Mead & White addition to Kingscote, these windows change shade and color as the sun moves throughout the day. According to the accounts of William Henry King and his payment to Louis C. Tiffany & Co. the individual tiles were originally priced at .25 cents each. The dahlia panels in the transom windows, while incorporated into the overall design, were produced by the separate designer D. Turno.
