Description
A SILK THREAD ON ECRU LINEN CROSS AND SATIN STITCH SAMPLER MADE BY BETSY CONKLING, AGE 7 (American, dated 7/14/1773). The narrow brown rectangular cross-stitch border surrounds a central field of several horizontal bands, stitched on the top two bands is the alphabet in gold thread underlined with powder blue. The third band has numbers done in powder blue above a gold line. The fourth and fifth lines are in gold thread underlined in moss and read "Betsy. Conkling Her. Sampler." The sixth line is sewn in yellow thread and reads "July.the.14.1773" underlined with moss thread. The seventh band is moss and brown above yellow. The eighth is of teal lettering and brown above brown. The ninth band is threadbare, and the tenth has an illegible phrase underlined with gold reading "___cruel death is all." The eleventh band is done in gold with an illegible phrase underlined with gold. The twelfth and thirteenth bands are done with words in gold and blue stitch underlined with gold. Housed in a giltwood frame.
