Description
A HOUSEKEEPER'S CARRIAGE, COUPE, ROCKAWAY (American, 19th century) by Fudder Brothers of Newport, RI. The coupe is painted in Vanderbilt livery, with the monogram "CV" on the door. The passenger compartment has side-by-side seating for two passengers. It is upholstered in buttoned black leather with maroon carpeting and maroon felt head linings, and fitted with sliding windows at the front and rear, all with roller blinds and leather fittings on the front panel for ladies' accessories. The coachman's seat is also upholstered in buttoned black leather and protected by a parasol roof with carriage lamps on both sides. It is mounted on elliptical springs with a pole shaft for 2 horses. The carriage has light iron-tired wheels and the doors are fitted with polished brass handles.
