Description
ONE SINGLE COMB CYLINDER PLAYING MUSIC BOX IN A ROSEWOOD CASE (American, 1886). This music box was John Nicholas Brown's toy as a child at Harbor Court, Newport. On the inside of the lid there is adhered a paper label with the song list "The Old Folks at Home/Marching thro Georgia/After the Ball Waltz/The Fisher’s Hornpipe Polka/Washington Post March/O Promise Me!/Martha Last Rose of Summer/The Bowery Waltz/A Life on the Ocean Wave." The interior mechanism of the music box has a safety check that is stamped "Jacots/Patented/Safety Check/Sept. 22, 1886." The safety check stops the music box cylinder from spinning too fast and damaging the pins and teeth of the combs.
