Description
PORTRAIT OF THOMAS TOWNSEND (1742-1822) in oil on canvas by an unknown artist in the School of Gilbert Stuart (American, c. 1810). The subject is depicted at half length, facing left, wearing a black waistcoat with a white collar and jabot beneath a light brown overcoat. He has a pensive face with a ruddy complexion and close cropped gray hair. The sitter is depicted against a black background, the canvas is unsigned and housed in a contemporary mahogany veneer frame.
