MAQUETTE FOR THE 102nd ENGINEERS (American, modeled 1916-1919, cast 1919) portraying Brigadier General Cornelius Vanderbilt, the brother of the artist Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (American, 1875-1942). The bronze preliminary study depicts a male soldier figure, in stripped down uniform, bent over and leaning into a shovel load while digging a trench. It is signed on the side of the base "Gertrude V. Whitney, 1919."
