Mantel Clock

19th century

AN ORMOLU AND BRONZE MANTEL CLOCK AFTER GIRODET (French, 19th century). The movement, with a silvered dial surrounded by gilt bezel with applied signs of the Zodiac, is contained in a rectangular rouge griotté marble case with slightly concave sides raised on ormolu Sphinx feet and overlaid with ormolu appliques depicting Egyptian motifs including figures and winged chimera. The whole is surmounted by a bronze group with a semi-naked Egyptian warrior, wearing a billowing cape and turban and holding with his left arm a wounded comrade who is wearing native dress of fur-trimmed cape, turban and embroidered vest. The warrior has a ormolu sword (Scmitar) in his right hand and his right leg resting on an ormolu military trophy of a toppled baluster and classical helmet. French maker after 1810 paiting by Girodet, and Tiffany & Co, was the retailer.
