AN OIL ON CANVAS MARINESCAPE PAINTING OF THE STEAM YACHT "ALVA" BY ANTONIO JACOBSEN (1850-1921). Jacobsen, America’s foremost marine artist, was entering his mature period with this 1892 view of the W. K. Vanderbilt steam yacht ALVA. Designed by St. Clair Byrne and built by Harlan & Hollingsworth, the steel-hulled "ALVA" was a 285 foot three masted topsail schooner launched October 14, 1886 for its owner W.K. Vanderbilt, and named for his wife Alva. The yacht is viewed under full sail at sea. Color plays an important role in the work, with greens predominating over the blue of the sky and the sea appears almost translucent. The black hull is decorated with gilt scrollwork at the bow and with three teak cabins on deck. There are six crew figures are visible on deck, as well as two passengers on a raised platform and two by the rails of foreward cabin. The central mast flies burgee of the New York Yacht Club.
