"COMMERCE AND SEAPOWER" (American, 1913), an oil on canvas marine scene by Henry Reuterdahl (American, 1871-1925). The canvas depicts Harold S. Vanderbilt's schooner Vagrant amidst heavy commercial and military shipping on the Hudson River in the port of New York with the lower Manhattan commercial skyline in the background. Painted as a decorative panel for Vanderbilt's yacht Vagrant and subsequently removed by Mr. Vanderbilt at the sale of the vessel. The canvas is signed on the bottom left corner “H. Rueterdahl N.Y.Y.C. / 1913.” The canvas is housed in a giltwood frame.
