Description
An oil on canvas Barbizon School landscape painting (French, c. 1900) by Francois Maury (French, 1861 - 1933) entitled "Sous Bois." The central foreground of depicts an allée of beech trees in the interior of a sunlit forest on an autumn day, continuing to the vanishing point in tones of bright yellow, green, and orange. The small figure of a woman gathering firewood, dressed in white, can be seen emerging from the trees. The canvas is signed on the lower right corner in dark brown paint "F. Maury." The canvas is in an elaborate rococo giltwood frame decorated with a scrolling flowering vine motif. The four corners of the frame feature stylized shells.
