"THE FAVORITE HORSE AND DOG OF JOSEPH NAGLE" (English, c. 1838) by Thomas Herring (English, 1795-1865). This stable scene depicts a sleek dark brown horse with a black tail sniffing a small white dog. Overhead hangs a lantern, to the left, hay filled stalls, and in the background a gentleman wearing a white shirt beneath a yellow vest, grey breeches, and a tall black hat. The original giltwood frame has a stylized leaf design accenting the four corners.
