Title
A Two-handled Japonesque Porcelain Vase
Creator
Date
19th century
Description
ONE JAPONESQUE ROYAL CROWN DERBY PORCELAIN VASE (English, ca. 1890). It is a large sepia ground amphora-shaped vase painted with an overall motif of herons with craned necks against a tropical landscape. The composition is enriched with two horizontal bands of gold jewel-decorated scrollwork. The use of raised gilding and the exotic shape signal this piece as likely being the work of the Royal Crown Derby works of Derby, England. Beginning in 1811, Crown Derby had begun to engage the services of noted painters and the firm quickly became known for its larger and more flamboyant production with a specialty in Japanese-derived patterns.
