Description
A Louis XVI giltwood fire screen (French, c. 1780). The screen's rectangular stand is carved on the front and sides with guilloche bands surrounding flowerheads and intersected at the corners with paterae. The center contains a pierced section, carved with flowering vines below an embroidered silk banner bearing the arms of the "Grand Dauphin" (1662 - 1711), centered by stylized vines and dolphins in grey and white silk on a blue ground. The whole is raised on short stop-fluted blocks, with bellflower and paterae carved trestle supports. This terminates in carved square feet with fret keys.
