19th century
Description
A GRAY PAINTED ROCOCO CARVED FRENCH STYLE DOUBLE BED (French, 19th century) from the workshop of Jules Allard et ses Fils with upholstery by Pregaldini, Paris. The bed was commissioned by Alva Vanderbilt (American, 1853-1933) for her bedroom at Marble House. The design was inspired by a print published by Daniel Marot (French, 1663-1752). The shaped head-board is carved with a shell and trailing foliate design at center, this is framed by female figures reaching toward the center. The serpentine foot-board has winged female busts carved on the top corners, scroll feet, and a central shell motif. The bed is raised on a dais and has an overhanging baldachin canopy.
