Portrait of Mrs. John R. Drexel

Full length oil on canvas portrait of Mrs. John R. Drexel Sr., née Alice Gordon Troth (American, 1865-1947), unsigned but attributed to Pierre Troubetzkoy who also painted Mrs. Drexel in 1910. This piece was painted in Philadelphia, around 1914. The subject wears a white lace dress and her hand rests on a bureau plat that bares two vases of flowers, a Samson urn mounted as a lamp and four stacked books. Her left hand clutches a jumbled lace shawl. Alice T. Drexel, of an old Philadelphia family married New York-Philadelphia-Paris banker John R. Drexel I of Drexel-Morgan Bank and was active socially in New York and Newport, residing at Fairholme on Ruggles Avenue. She was active subsequently in pre-WWI in Berlin, Dresden and lastly Paris, where she moved and died during WWII.
