Description
A PORTRAIT OF MRS. THOMAS RIDGWAY, nee Edith F.S. Wayne, 1889-1973, (American, c. 1912) done in full length view by Richard Blossom Farley (American, 1875-1954). This portrait was painted shortly after the marriage of Miss Edith Wayne, a descendant of the Revolutionary War general Anthony Wayne (1745-1796), to Thomas Ridgway, both of Philadelphia. The subject is depicted frontally, standing in a waterfront garden setting wearing a white summer dress with a blue sash, and a straw bonnet with a blue ribbon. Her right hand is extended over a rhododendron bush with weeping willows cascading to the water's edge in the background. A lone swan glides on the pond's surface in the left rear. The canvas is signed on the lower right by Farley with a cypher. The Ridgways primary residence was 1525 Pine Street in Philadelphia and the couple spent summers at "Inchiquin" on Bellevue Avenue, Newport. They had two sons: Thomas Ridgway, Jr. and Anthony Wayne Ridgway.
