Description
Attributed to Sunqua, the painting depicts the waterfront Bund with large Hongs in the left foreground and a merchantman flying the Red Ensign at anchor. The town and other anchored European ships are in the distance. The U.S. flag is seen floating in the background in the garden of the residence of J.N.A. Griswold, a Russell & Co. representative. For several decades Russell & Co. was the foremost USA merchant business operating on the China coast. Their residence, known as the "Stone House", was flanked by offices and godowns on the Shanghai Bund.
