OIL ON CANVAS COPY OF 'THE HARTLEY FAMILY' A PORTRAIT (American, 19th century). The original is by Henry Benbridge (American School, 1743-1812). The portrait depicts four members of the family and a dog in a garden setting. Depicting L to R.: (older woman) Margaret Miles Hartley Williams; her daughter, Sarah Hartley Crosthwaite Sommersall; her daughter Mary who (1775-1813) later married Col. John Ward of South Carolina and standing in the foreground Mary Somersall's young cousin Margaret Phelp Campbill. The original was hung in the Drawing Room of Kingscote in the era of Mrs. Anthony B. Rives until 1972, when it was passed to a private collection. This is a copy made for the family by Margaret Armstrong.
