Description
TORRE DE’ SCHIAVI (American, dated 1871) by David Maitland Armstrong (American, 1836-1918). This oil on board painting depicts a ruin on the Roman Campagna, a favorite subject of the artist. According to David Maitland Armstrong’s autobiography he painted several different versions of this view over his lifetime, during frequent trips to Italy. The view shows the 'Torre de’ Schiavi', or Tower of Slaves, an ancient Roman mausoleum off the Via Prenestina outside Rome. Sheep graze before the ruin and the moon peaks above the horizon in the background. The canvas is dated “Rome – 1871 –” on the bottom left corner. David Maitland Armstrong, a friend of Stanford White and Louis Comfort Tiffany, served as American Consul to the Papal States in 1869.
