Description
AN AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY CORNER CHAIR (Newport, circa 1770). The chair has U-shaped back rail ending in scroll-shaped handholds above two pierced uprights and is supported on a large front cabriole leg terminating in a ball and claw foot. The three cabriole back legs terminate in pad feet. The balloon shaped slip seat is covered in black leather. Related to the John Brown round-about chair (Providence John Brown House) except that this example features straight turned posts rather than inswept arms.
