Description
AN AMERICAN HEPPLEWHITE TALL-CASE CLOCK BY PALMER & COE (Newport, circa 1806), WITH WORKS BY CALEB WHEATON (Providence, circa 1806). The arched bonnet is accented with three ball-shape brass finials raised on fluted rectangular plinths. The central finial has scroll fretwork above two doric columns each with a brass base and capital flanking an arched glass panel door revealing three white dials within spandrel surrounds of pink hand-painted bell flowers. Above the Roman numeral 'XII' is a painted bird, peach, and floral branch. The large dial with black Roman numerals displays the date and seconds and is inscribed 'C. Wheaton Providence' in script. The mahogany case is accented with tulipwood inlay and has a tall central door. The interior has a maker's label inscribed in black 'Palmer & Coe Cabinet and Chair Maker Long Wharf Newport'. The whole is raised on a rectangular plinth and four bracket feet. a = Case b = Bonnet c = Key
