Description
AN AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY HIGHBOY ATTRIBUTED TO THE TOWNSEND-GODDARD WORKSHOPS (Newport, circa 1760). The closed bonnet-top has upper molding encasing an urn and flame finial on a square fluted plinth. The upper case has two short drawers above three long graduated drawers. The lower case has one long drawer above two small drawers flanking a small central rectangular drawer above a bold and deeply carved open center shell bearing eleven convex lobes. The drawers each have original brass handles and mounts. The whole is raised on four detachable cabriole legs, the front legs have beautiful petal and leaf carvings on the knees terminating in boldly carved ball and claw feet. The back legs terminate in wafer pad feet.
