Commemorative plate made of white ironstone; blue underglaze inscription reads "Votes for Women". On verso: John Maddock & Sons maker's mark. This plate was made for the Conference of Great Women held at Marble House, July 8 and 9, 1914; the Conference was hosted by Alva Vanderbilt Belmont (Mrs. O. H. P. Belmont). The campaign for women's rights began on the higher social levels, later trickled down to middle class.
