Description
This Venetian oil on canvas history painting by Antonio Molinari (Italian, 1655-1704) was commissioned for the Ca' Corner, Venice by Bernardo Corner. The Emperor Charles IV is shown seated in a throne with a damask drapery backdrop receiving homage from Marco Corner, the latter inching slightly forward and wearing a rich red silk cloak with a gold brocade cowl and holding gloves in his left hand. The canvas is housed in the original 18th century giltwood frame. Two pen and wash preparatory drawings by Molinari for this composition are in the collections of the Kunstmuseum der Stadt Dusseldorf.
