AN UNSIGNED OIL ON BOARD PORTRAIT OF REVEREND HENRY MELCHOIR MUHLENBERG (1711-1787) DEPICTED IN HALF-LENGTH FACING LEFT (American, circa 1880), after the posthumous eighteenth century original by Jacob Eichholtz (1776-1842). The sitter wears a black robe and the white collar of his profession in front of a grey gravel background. The gilt frame features an engraved brass plate reading: "Rev. Henry Melchoir Muhlenberg / Nov 6, 1711- Oct 10, 1787 / Founder of the Lutheran Church in America". Muhlenberg's actual birth date was September 11, 1711.
