UNTITLED ARCHITECTURAL VIEW (American, dated January 5, 1869) attributed to Thomas Hiram Hotchkiss (American, ca. 1834-1869). The oil on board painting depicts a mausoleum on the Roman Campagna, a popular subject among American artists visiting Italy. The view shows the Torrre dei Schiavi or Tower of Slaves, off the Via Prenestina outside of Rome, near the so-called Villa Gordiani. The canvas is signed and dated on the bottom right corner. Hotchkiss painted this ruin previously in 1865 in a work entitled “Torre di Schiavi” that is held in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum
