"A Sojourn by the Seaside"

“A SOJOURN BY THE SEASIDE” (American, ca. 1880) by Edward D. Boit (American, 1840-1915), this oil on canvas seascape depicts a woman and child seated beneath an umbrella on a brush-covered cliff along the coast of Dinard, France, the sea with sail boats and an approaching steamship appears in the right background. The artist, Edward D. Boit lived and painted seasonally on the outskirts of Dinard, between Cancale and the Duguesclin Bay, in Brittany. Boit initially trained as a lawyer, attending Harvard Law School, but turned to painting as a career instead. He befriend John Singer Sargent, who in 1882, immortalized the children of Boit and his wife Mary Louisa Cushing Boit, in the masterpiece “The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit”, now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
