PORTAIT OF JOSEPHINE MELLON SOUTHWICK AYER (French, 1892) by Charles Emile-Auguste Duran, also known as Carolus-Duran, (French, 1838-1917). The subject, Mrs. James Cook (1827-1898), is depicted in full view, seated in an armchair. She wears a pink grown trimmed with lace and is partially draped by a fur lined mantle. Her hair is coiffed atop her head, and she is adorned with a pair of pearl earrings, a double strand of pearls around her neck, and a brooch at her breast.
Josephine was the daughter of Royal Southwick and Direxa Claflin Southwick, in 1850 she married James Cook Ayer (1819-1878). Together they had three children, Frederick, Henry, and Lesley Josephine Ayer. The artist, Charles Duran, was a co-founder of the Second Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, and as a teacher he mentored many famous artists, including John Singer Sargent and Paul César Helleu.
